Strategic Development Plans

Strategic Development Plans (SDPs) will be produced to guide strategic development at a regional level. Four SDPs wil be written, covering North Wales, Mid Wales, South West Wales and South East Wales. They will be developed by Corporate Joint Committees, made up of the Leaders from each of the councils in the region.

SDPs will cover a minimum of a 20-year period,  and will address strategic and cross boundary issues, such as the scale and location of housing growth, strategic sites for development, key green infrastructure, transport, energy and waste.

Once SDPs are in place, the following iteration of Local Development Plans will omit or reduce the Preferred Strategy Stage, as those strategic issues will be in the SDP.  These new LDPs will be called Local Development Plan Lites (LDPLs). 

The development of SDPs will follow the same process as an LDP, and should have several opportunities for public engagement. It is therefore important that you do read and comment on your regional SDP, as once the SDP policies are adopted, your LDPL must comply with those policies that sit above it.
