Welsh Actor Michael Sheen supports Furnace to Flowers

Furnace to Flowers gains momentum during the Grow Wild public vote as Welsh actor, Michael Sheen gives his support to Gwent Wildlife Trust’s competition.

Gwent Wildlife Trust (GWT) is thrilled to have been given the full support for its Grow Wild project from  Hollywood actor, Michael Sheen.

The warm support Furnace to Flowers has received echoes the importance of celebrating the industrial heritage of Wales, and the importance of a Living Landscape for the local community and wildlife to enjoy.

Grow Wild is a £10.5m programme supported by Big Lottery Fund and led by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, to inspire people to sow, grow and support UK native wild flowers. GWT’s Furnace to Flowers is one of three finalists to have reached the public vote stage as part of a Wales-wide competition run by Grow Wild.

From the very beginning, the Furnace to Flowers project was designed with the local community and wildlife firmly in mind. From engaging with local young people in helping to design the project to working closely with partners including Communities First, Victoria Residents Association, Barnardo’s, Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and Ebbw Vale Works Museum.

To bring the vision of Furnace to Flowers to life, Michael Sheen and GWT are urging as many people as possible from Wales, the entire UK and abroad, to cast a vote now either by visiting votewales.growwilduk.com, then simply clicking on Furnace to Flowers and by calling 0808 228 7203 (FREE from UK landlines or mobiles).

Veronika Brannovic, GWT Living Landscape Manager and Furnace to Flowers Project Lead, said:

‘Winning the Grow Wild competition with Furnace to Flowers would be a huge boost and make a real, long-term difference to communities throughout Blaenau Gwent.

We have been overwhelmed with the support we have had from local people so far and we are really pleased that Michael Sheen has taken time out from his busy schedules to show his support as well. Diolch yn fawr, bawb!’

With enough public votes, Furnace to Flowers can turn a wonderful vision into a reality and transform the former steel-works into a wild flower haven, which celebrates the past, present and future.
