2-day hedge-laying course at Pentwyn Farm SSSI Nature Reserve

Who doesn't love a well-laid hedge?

On this 2-day course you will:

  • Learn how to tell when a hedge is suitable for laying,
  • Find out what tools you need for the craft and
  • Learn hands-on how to go about laying the perfect hedge.

This course is run by our Woodland Officer, Doug Lloyd and is suitable for complete beginners up to intermediate level.

Hedge-laying is traditional rural skill, practised for hundreds of years and essential if we are to conserve our wildlife and landscape for future generations. Hedge-laying is a seasonal job, carried out between October and March when trees and shrubs are dormant, and birds have finished nesting in the hedges.

As well as better understanding the history of hedge-laying and why they are laid in this traditional method, you will also find out about how, correctly managed, hedges  provide many environmental services, are vitally important for wildlife as a refuge, a source of food, and as corridors along which they can move through the landscape.
